The Arnota Monastery is dedicated to Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel and was founded by Prince Matei Basarab (1633-1654), who is shown in the votive painting made by Stroe of Târgoviște in 1644. The monastery also serves as a necropolis for its founder. The church was restored between 1705 and 1706 during the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu. A steeple was erected at the time, on the entrance porch. The church was then given a new portal and an oak altar.
